lyrics

Sitting around in Arthur’s court, we’ve not much to report. Christmastide and merry men our we.
Gathered around to take our meat, with a song on our tongue and a dance in our feet. Smash at the door, and who deign come greet?
A giant man all dressed in green, gold and emerald to match his skin, such a one as this the likes we’ve never seen.
“Far realms have heard of Arthur’s court, why cowardice now your tongues cut short? Pray tell me which of these is lord.”
Then Arthur stood up strong and right, “I won’t have you offend my knights, each is true and full noble too.
Sir I have a kingdom and people to guide, I give them food and shelter inside. I wish the same for you, o man, while you’re here no sorrow’ll betide.”
“If you are Arthur all is right, and I will end my quest tonight. But I’ve not come to lodge or dine. Instead I have a game in mind.
Take up my great axe by thy hand and lop my head of in a glint. All I’ll ask of you o man is that you let me return the dint.”
Gawain then stood up strong and bold to intercede for his lord, “Far better sire that I should fall, for you must rule o’er this great hall.”
He took that battle axe and threw. All thought that giant to be slew. Not a moment the head rolled pon the floor for the green man he took it up once more.
And mounting on his emerald steed the head he held began to speak, “In one year’s time come New Year’s Eve to the green chapel thy fate to seek.”
Then all had sorrow in their eyes. Arthur himself did bitterly cry, for cut-naped men there is no cure. There’re only gods this can endure.
A year most past All Hallow’s Eve to start the journey Gawain conceived. All armor-clad and s’ emblazoned crest, the five point star upon his breast.
